A Winter Solstice Prayer

A Winter Solstice Prayer

A friend sent me the full quote of Albert Camus’s well-known …in the midst of winter I found there was within me an invincible summer…”  I looked it up in GoodReads. It’s true…this is all of that Camus said:

My dear,

In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love.

In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.

In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.

I realized, through it all, that…

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.

– Albert Camus

Two more poems/prayers for winter solstice, more resonant, perhaps, in the annual turn of the dark toward the light now in the Northern Hemisphere. Still, the light in every human heart in every day of the year calls forth hope of luminous goodness everywhere in any season.

A Winter Solstice Prayer

– Edward Hayes

The dark shadow of space leans over us. . . . .
We are mindful that the darkness of greed, exploitation, and hatred
also lengthens its shadow over our small planet Earth.
As our ancestors feared death and evil and all the dark powers of winter,
we fear that the darkness of war, discrimination, and selfishness
may doom us and our planet to an eternal winter.

May we find hope in the lights we have kindled on this sacred night,
hope in one another and in all who form the web-work of peace and justice
that spans the world.

In the heart of every person on this Earth
burns the spark of luminous goodness;
in no heart is there total darkness.
May we who have celebrated this winter solstice,
by our lives and service, by our prayers and love,
call forth from one another the light and the love
that is hidden in every heart.

Candles for Solstice

May you celebrate and share with others…

Candles of light in the darkness,

Candles of grace in the suffering,

Candles of joy despite all sadness,

Candles of hope where despair keeps watch,

Candles of courage for fears ever present,

Candles of peace for tumultuous days,

Candles of forgiveness for all the difficulties,

Candles of love to embrace all that is Life,

Candles that will burn all the year long.

– Linda Graham based on Howard Thurman
