Transitions Require Resilience; Resilience Requires Transitions
With the publication of Resilience coming up in September 2018, I’m transitioning how I include quotations and pith wisdom in my weekly posts. Quotes will still be included, abundantly, in the weekly Resources for Recovering Resilience and the monthly e-newsletters. And I’ll be offering more resources for recovering resilience in coming months.
This week’s quotes honor the challenges of embracing transitions as life unfolds, truly essential to resilience.
To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.
– Henri Bergson
So long as a person is capable of self-renewal, they are a living being.
– Henri-Frederic Amiel
Light precedes every transition. Whether at the end of a tunnel, through a crack in the door or the flash of an idea, it is always there, heralding a new beginning.
– Teresa Tsalaky
Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it. If change is the essence of existence one would have thought it only sensible to make it the premise of our philosophy.
– W. Somerset Maugham
We know what we are, but know not what we may be.
– William Shakespeare
The most important thing to remember is this: To be ready at any moment to give up what you are for what you might become.
Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.
– Herbert Otto
A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is. Once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it.
– Nikki Giovanni
Transitions themselves are not the issue, but how well you respond to their challenges!
– Jim George
How you respond to the issue…is the issue.
– Frankie Perez
Any transition serious enough to alter your definition of self will require not just small adjustments in your way of living and thinking but a full-on metamorphosis.
– Martha Beck
Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.
– Anais Nin
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.
– Tony Robbins
Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.
– Ann Landers
Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.
– John Wooden
Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.
– George Bernard Shaw
Want the change…
What locks itself in sameness has congealed.
Is it safer to be gray and numb?
What turns hard becomes rigid
and is easily shattered.
Pour yourself out like a fountain.
Flow into the knowledge that what you are seeking
finishes often at the start, and, with ending, begins.
– Ranier Maria Rilke, Sonnets to Orpheus XII
translated by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows
Change is situational. Transition, on the other hand, is psychological. It is not those events, but rather the inner reorientation or self-redefinition that you have to go through in order to incorporate any of those changes into your life. Without a transition, a change is just a rearrangement of the furniture. Unless transition happens, the change won’t work, but it doesn’t take.
– William Bridges
You may wonder: How can I leave it all behind if I am just coming back to it? How can I make a new beginning if I simply return to the old? The answer lies in the return. You will not come back to the same old thing. What you return to has changed because you have changed. Your perceptions will be altered. You will not incorporate into the same body, status, or world you left behind. The river has been flowing while you were gone. Now it does not look like the same river.
– Steven Foster
Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
– Maria Robinson
May my life flow like a river, ever surprised by its own unfolding.
– John O’Donohue
